Public Forum: Archeology Talk and Artifact Roadshow Cost: FREE Overview: On Friday, October 6 at 7:00 PM, the Texas Archeological Society will sponsor a FREE public lecture followed by artifact identification.
Location: San Marcos Conference Center, Embassy Suites,1001 E McCarty Ln, San Marcos, TX 78666 Veramendi Ballroom F At 7:00 PM professional archeologist Doug Boyd will present “The Tom Cook Blacksmith Shop and the Forgotten History of African American Blacksmiths in Texas.” Learn about how a recent road widening project in Denton County led to the discovery of the first documented African American freedman-owned blacksmith shop in Texas. This collaborative project incorporated research, descendant community outreach, oral history, and archeological investigations to reveal the story of a successful black entrepreneur operating along the Chisholm Trail. Following the presentation, Professional we’ll have a panel of archeologists to help identify objects you wish to know more about. Please note – TAS does not make appraisals or verifications. Please do not bring large Collections. Following the presentation, Posters will be displayed, depicting various ongoing archeological research projects. |
