WHO WE ARE...since 1928

The TAS is a diverse group of people with all levels of experience taking part in research and training through Academies, Field School, and the Annual Meeting.

TAS promotes and encourages: 

  • learning about Texas archeology
  • scientific archeological research
  • preservation and conservation of materials and sites
  • interpretation and publication of archeological data
  • building a community of inclusion

TAS does not condone:

  • buying and selling artifacts for commercial purposes
  • disregard of proper archeological research techniques
  • willful destruction or distortion of archeological data

The TAS is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

    The Zooarcheology and Osteology Academy is a two-day TAS Academy that offers an introduction to the identification, analysis and interpretation of archeological animal and human skeletal remains. Classroom and hands-on laboratory sessions will be held in the Archaeology Laboratory of Rice University.

    The 2026 Rock Art Academy is a two-day TAS Academy that explores regional rock art archeological sites, Mogollon archeological sites, and how investigators use this information to interpret the human and natural histories of an area. Classroom sessions for the Academy will be held at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology with the field session at Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site.

    The 2026 Archeology 101 Academy is a three-day TAS Academy that teaches participants about site identification, recording and proper excavation techniques in the field of archeology.  Classroom sessions for the Academy will be held at Fort Concho National Historic Landmark with field session at the Chaparral Ranch on April 10-12, 2026. Classroom lectures address the larger field of archeology to help orient new learners with respect to goals, methods, and concepts.
