2023 Rock Art Academy

2023 Rock Art Academy in El Paso

EVENT HAS PASSED

February 25th - 26th, 2023

The 2023 Rock Art Academy is a two-day Texas Archeology Academy that explores regional rock art, Mogollon archeological sites, and how investigators use this information to interpret the human and natural histories of an area. Classroom sessions for the Academy is tentatively scheduled to be held at the El Paso Museum of Archaeology with the field session at Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site on February 25-26, 2023.

Learning to record and interpret rock art can illuminate both how a site was used by people and how people interacted with the natural environment and cultural influences. This Academy will include classroom instruction, and field trips where participants will have the opportunity to participate in a rock art recording session at Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site.

The lead instructor is Mr. Myles Miller, assisted by Dr. Larry Loendorf, Mr. Mark Willis and Ms. Margaret Berrier. The instructor team includes experienced rock art specialists and archeologists who specialize in Mogollon culture. For the Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site portion of the class, participants will be hiking and are advised that they should be able to climb at least three flights of stairs unassisted.

The registration fee ($100) plus TAS membership is for two days instruction with refreshments and lunch; it includes a digital manual. A certificate of participation will be awarded to attendees. Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit is available for teachers as approved by the Texas State Board of Education Certification (SBEC). No previous archeological experience is needed to enjoy these sessions.
