Meet the Regional Director —

Regional News — January 2008
The Rio Grande Delta Archeological Society is planning an organizational meeting in January. Summer activities went well, as did the Archeology Fair in October. There was so much information, new ideas and new contacts gleaned at the Annual TAS meeting this year. Focus at this time is centered on the local society and setting up the necessary officers. The vision is to see other societies started within the region, along with a web site to promote History and Archeology in our own backyard, of which I have begun.
There has been more of an interest locally in the museums of Brownsville. More activities accessible to the local people have begun. A combination of advertising and pulling down the veil that has kept the local community from visiting the very places that deal with their heritage will definitely make all feel welcome.
We are making plans for the upcoming summer, to coordinate with other societies locally, and schools, for the education in preservation of our history. One thing interesting about archeology is that it is something anyone can be part of and participate.
I and the local society here will be putting forth a special effort to present programs and workshops to folks in this area, and give our youth the opportunity of experiencing an avenue they may wish to pursue. Teaching preservation, especially to those of a young age, will establish some values that will grow with them.
We have speakers, presentations, field trips when possible. A great way to find out what is happening with Area and State Activities, workshops and events with pass out material for those that are interested.
As always, comments and suggestions are welcome.
Contact me if you would like to be on the mailing list to receive the monthly E-Newsletter, and updates on statewide Activities as they become available.
